Were David Frizzell and Shelly West nominated separately as solo artists in 1981, rather than for their duo career?
I’m not impressed by this year’s new artist nominees.
Unlike the Grammys, it appears that the CMAs got their new artist awards right more times than not.
@Occasional Hope,
That’s a very good question. I just checked the CMA database and according to the Notes section, you’re right about them being nominated as a duo!
Alison Krauss, Shania and Faith all nominated in the same year? Amazing.
Is that THE Ray Charles who was nominated in 1985? If so, his Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music was released way back in 1962…
Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music was NOT a country record. Although really great, it was an R&B/pop cover album of country songs. In 1985 Ray actually issued a country album
Billboard posted an interesting article last week on the surprising list of artists who have lost this award: Reba, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain (to Bryan White?!?!), Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Florida Georgia Line, Miranda Lambert, Faith Hill, Eric Church, Tim McGraw, Trisha Yearwood, Brooks & Dunn, Kathy Mattea, Patty Loveless, Rosanne Cash, Eric Church, Dwight Yoakam, Lee Ann Womack, Sugarland… Not bad company (well, most of them anyway).
Vern Gosdin and Keith Whitley too. In fact, trying to think of some of my favorite post 1980 artists who were never nominated, I could only come up with two: Vince Gill and Diamond Rio.
