“Mess Me Up”
Gary Allan
Written by Ross Copperman, Ashley Gorley, and Shane McAnally
You know that I really want to like this, right?
Gary Allan is one of my all time favorite male vocalists, and with Tough All Over, he also released on of my favorite all time albums. So a new song from Gary Allan, written by a songwriting team that is a little more hit than miss, should be an easy win.
But it’s not. The lyrics are interesting and Allan is still in fine voice. But they completely forgot the melody and the rhythm. The words don’t flow quite right in the verses, and the chorus isn’t the tension release that it presents itself to be.
It’s good, but not Gary Allan good, you know?
Grade: B-
Didn’t he already do this song a few years ago? It was called “Kiss Me When I’m Down,” and it was kinda awesome. This isn’t bad, but…
It’s much better than his last few singles.
Haven’t played any Gary Allan in over 6 months according to my i-tunes library. Most frequently played are Smoke Rings and Tough Little Boys. This new effort is one of those “if i listened to radio, it wouldn’t make me change the station when it was played” songs.
