Single Review: Luke Bryan, “I See You”

Luke Bryan I See You

“I See You”
Luke Bryan

Written by Luke Bryan, Ashley Gorley, and Luke Laird

This is the sound of an artist that’s struggling against the confines of the niche he’s been assigned, but not being willing to give up enough of the trappings to completely break free.

So while he’s singing about a heartbreak that he can’t get beyond, we still have the references to going out drinking with friends  and to the laying on the bed of his truck.   He’s talking about how he’s haunted by the memory of a particular woman, but said memory doesn’t go beyond her taking him by the hand (“Boy, come dance with me”) and then jumping on the stage with the band.

We’re left with a song that’s too serious for the bro-country audience and not substantial enough for an older audience, but it should be very appealing to country music fans who are currently making the transition from the former to the latter.

  1. Well I’d give it lower the songs way too uneven and his delivery feels subpar to me. This song with your points feel like a D to a D-. Nice job with your reviews

  2. I got so tired of this song being played to death on my radio station that I decided to email the station and tell them that every time they play this song I want to throw my radio out the window!! :) No response.
Do you all think Luke could actually sing anything besides this type of music?? I live in Georgia and the only 2 country stations I can pick up play all the GA artist over and over. Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Cole Swindell, Brantley Gilbert, FGL, Lady A, and now Sam Hunt! I know there is more, but can’t think right now. What’s an (older)person to do? Bro’d to death in GA.

  3. It is not an awful song. I actually feel sorry for the song, it only feels strained because it is a typical Luke Bryan song. There is no camouflaged originality giving it a new chrome sheen.

  4. Setting this song aside, which honestly feels like album filler that someone at the label decided to release as a single just to prove that radio will play ANYTHING by Bryan at this point, I’m honestly curious where his career goes going forward. He has ridden the Bro-Country wave to the top of the Country industry, but if the Bro-Country fad/trend slows down, I honestly wonder if he and Aldean will be able to pull back quick enough to avoid the fates likely to befall Florida Georgia Line, Chase Rice, etc.

If I was in Bryan’s camp I would be worried he has strayed too far into the trend and won’t be able to get past it like McGraw, Bentley, etc. have been able to pull off.
