Favorite Five Game

You know that part of the concert where the artist tries to get some audience participation going?

We’re gonna give that a try here.

My original idea was to start a “Favorite Five” feature, where every week we’d ask a different question.  Something like Favorite Five Songs by Artist X, Favorite Five Opening Album Tracks, Favorite Songs About Rain, etc.

Instead, I’m thinking we might be able to set a comment thread record if we turn it into a game.

Here’s how it works.  Each commenter posts their Favorite Five in response to the commenter before them, then creates a new Favorite Five for the next person to answer.  Try not to repeat categories too soon!

Let’s get this started with…

  66. Willie didn’t write “Always On My Mind”. I’d have to look up who actually wrote it, but I know Brenda Lee and Elvis both recorded it before Willie. I always thought he wrote it too, since it sounds like a quintessential Willie Nelson melody and lyric, until I read his 1988 autobiography. He pointed out that his first recording of the song was as a duet with Merle Haggard. But Haggard didn’t like the song, so Willie recorded it solo.

Also, “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain” was written by Hank Williams mentor/Acuff-Rose Publishing co-founder Fred Rose. And “Whiskey River” was a hit for its writer Johnny Bush in 1972 before it became a signature song for Nelson from his 1978 Willie Nelson and Family Live album.

  67. Wayne Carson also wrote “The Letter,” which has been recorded about a zillion times.
