The ACM Awards has traditionally been overshadowed by the CMA Awards, despite its longer existence. This is for several reasons. First, the ACM originally existed to emphasize the West Coast country music scene, whereas the CMA Awards represented Nashville from the start. The ACM has also been more commercially-oriented from the beginning, as the history of this category proves. Eighteen of the last twenty winners in this ACM category are multi-platinum sellers, and the organization allowed greatest hits albums to compete for more than a decade.
Still, the ACM category has bragging rights of its own. Critically-acclaimed albums like Storms of Life, Trio, Killin’ Time and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend won at the ACMs but were overlooked by the CMAs. Additionally, women have also been far more successful at this ceremony. Only five women have ever won the CMA Album trophy, and one of them was Sissy Spacek! At the ACMs, women have dominated the category for the past three years, and the category has honored everyone from Loretta Lynn and Donna Fargo to K.T. Oslin and Shania Twain.
A special note about ACM flashbacks. Like the Grammys, the ACMs issue their award for a given year the following year, so the awards for 2009, for example, are given out in 2010. For the purposes of the flashbacks, Country Universe notes the year the award is presented. While the ACM first presented awards in 1966, the Album category wasn’t introduced until 1968.

Three previous winners – Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley, and Carrie Underwood – compete against the debut albums of two hot bands. Lady Antebellum and Zac Brown Band each picked up a Grammy this year and are well represented on the rest of the ACM ballot. This is a very competitive race. Even the sales-friendly nature of the ACMs doesn’t help much here, as four of these albums are platinum and Lambert’s just went gold.

I never understood why Conway Twitty didn’t win more awards during his career than he did. Loretta and Conway won Top Female and Top Male Vocalist Awards, respectively, in 1975. That was Conway’s only solo award during his entire career I believe.
The pair won 4 consecutive Vocal Duo trophies from the CMA from 1972 to 1975. In addition, the pair also picked up Top Vocal Duo honors from the ACM several times in the early to mid ’70s.

Wow, I have all those albums except for American Saturday Night. I know it’s probably not going to happen, but I would love to see Zac Brown win for Foundation. It’s a great album and quite worthy of the nomination. I think it’s still going to Carrie, even though I prefer Some Hearts over Play On.
The awards sisn’t become national in scope until about 1970, and even so , there remained a strong regional bias for several years which is more obvious in some of the other categories. Toobad Wynn Stewart didn’t win in 1968 – it was his only shot at any major album award
Wow, two of my favorite albums ever– Dixie Chicks’ Home and Mary Chapin Carpenter’s Stones in the Road– lost out. I can almost forgive them picking Alan Jackson’s Drive over Home, but really, the album that gave us “Indian Outlaw” is better than Stones in the freaking Road?! Come on. Were the ACM voters sent pictures of Tim McGraw in nothing but his buffalo briefs to sway them?

I think “Revolutio deserves album of the year, hands-down. I wasn’t even a moderate Miranda fan until I decided to take a gamble and purchase it (I really liked “White Liar,” and I thought her debut album was good.) I love this album now, and I see why so many people think Miranda is so underrated. I’m also thrilled she’s releasing “The House That Built Me” as a single; one of the best songs to come out of Nashvile in a long time. especially considering some of the weaker singles Taylor and Carrie have released.
I haven’t listened to the Paisley, ZBB, or Lady A albums, but I would suspect the latter have a better chance. How does it make since that the Atebellum cd even squeezed in here? It only went platinum, and didn’t produce anything close to a monster hit like “Need You Now.
ZBB has released several qauality singles, and I would suspect the album is solid. Then again, they’re not that well-known, and I would be surprised if a newer nominee was rewarded over an older one.
I’m a huge Underwood fan, but “Play On” isn’t strong enough to win this award, in my opinion. It’s got a few quality singles (“Someday When I Stop Loving You,” “Look At Me,” “Temporary Home,” and I’ll even say “Songs Like This” is quality, compared to some of her past upbeat material. The album has done well sales-wise, but I can’t imagine that overriding the fact that there are several albums here that are far suprior.
I’ll predict a toss-up between Lambert and Paisley. Miranda’s album is one of the strongest albums in awhile, momentum has increased singnifcantly with “White Liar” going #1, and the critics and fans love her albums. The voters like to reward Paisley, and his singles are pretty strong for the most part. But his album hasn’t done as well sales-wise, and I don’t think he has the same buzz Miranda does right now.

For as much as the CMA is often considered the standard bearer for country music, I think it’s really interesting how you pointed out that a lot of classic, critically lauded albums have won album of the year at The ACMs, and not at the CMAs. I don’t necessarily put too much stock in either academy or its respective voters, but I always thought the ACMs were portrayed as a laughingstock compared to the CMAs. Looking at the results of both, I don’t think that’s the case…often, the ACM got it right.
On a sidenote, I was surprised Alabama won as many album awards as they did. I’m not sure they’re really looked at as “album artists” today, although I admit to liking a lot of their early work, and enjoying some of their albums that won this award. I knew they were red-hot in the early eighties, but I didn’t know the extent that the owned the ACMs. To win entertainer of the year for five years straight, and then take three album of the year trophies alongside of that is just insane. I can imagine they felt some backlash from it all. (Heck, imagine if Taylor Swift has similar hardware in five years. The Country Music Blogosphere would go bonkers.)
As for this year, the award is really wide open. I think all of the nominees, outside of Carrie, have a shot. Lambert and the Zac Brown Band put out quality albums, and while I think the Paisley album is overrated, I can certainly see how it reflected his artistic direction, and why it was included among the nominees. My personal preference would be Miranda, but I have a hunch the award’s going to Lady A. Yeah, the album is over two years old, but they seem to have a lot of support among voters, and the music industry. Hopefully, the voters will have a “Storm of Life” moment, and go with the strongest album nominated.
I am surprised by Reba’s absence from this list too. My preference for this year would be Miranda followed by Brad and then ZBB.

In terms of album sales, Alabama had an extended run as country music’s best selling act – that run actually was a lot longer than their period of dominance at the ACMs

Me: They were neither very good albums. In hindsight, “Stones in the Road” was pretty bland – Clintonesque even. When I was in college, I thought the title track was fantastic. With age, I realize lines like “sacred burial ground” to describe JFK’s cemetery plot were absurd. Other than “Shut Up and Kiss Me”, it was a tepid, forgettable album. So the ACM’s probably bet on the right pony.

This selection kind of bores me, Miranda’s CD is my favorite out of the list, Paisley being second. There weren’t many albums released that caught my eye last year, period.
